Most studies have concentrated on the environmental effects of tropical deforestation. In this study, the author, professor of International Economics at the University of Groningen, investigates the underlying socio-economic causes and their respective contributions to it. Using a specially developed, integrated model, he is able to analyse the effects of socio-economic decisions by those in forest areas, and to assess the consequences of different policy alternatives. The results show how policy measures limited to dealing with the timber, which is internationally traded, are doomed to fail in slowing down deforestation processes. Only measures, which address the interests of those immediately, affected, and in particular measures dealing with population and land use policies, will have any success. A crucial survey and analysis for policy makers, practitioners and researchers
