One of the main conclusions from the study 'Le Parc National de Taï: synthèse des connaissances' (Tropenbos Series 8) was that the role of the local population in the management of the park and its bufferzone is passive. Also a comparative study based on the management of parks and nature reserves in humid tropical Africa was needed. Tropenbos Document 10 is such a study. It deals with management supported by the local population and conservation of natural resources through a participative approach. It shows that a better participative approach in the management of the Taï National Park and the buffer zone can serve as compensation to the local population for the loss of the natural resource. The study contains the results of a survey of other protected forests in continental Africa and Madagascar as well as experiences with the participative approach in Cameroon, Zaire and Madagascar. Initiatives and intentions in participative management in Uganda and Tanzania are cited.
