Through their daily practices, indigenous women have accumulated a specialized knowledge associated to agriculture, the establishment and maintenance of the chagra or conuco, the use of agrobiodiversity and the transformation and conservation of food, thus becoming the base of the family structure. Their role is fundamental in the transmission from generation to generation of agricultural knowledge that forms the base for food security and well-being of communities.

The campesino women from the Mortiño region in Colombia have created a dialogue platform to talk about about their community, their territory and the relevance of their actions for the regional development. This is how the weaving and embroidery afternoons that began a year ago are understood: they not only promote the discussion about the role of women in the páramos, but also rescue the knowledge related to the biological diversity of this ecosystem through the careful representation of orchids, frailejones and plants in general.

It was with these words that the participants of a workshop organized by TBI DR Congo have expressed their commitment to ownership and participation in the process of negotiating FLEGT-VPA in DR Congo. The event was organized to launch the project "FLEGT-VPA: logging and legal trade, everyone's business in Province Orientale" (5 June 2014).

The great diversity and richness of experiences on forest financing among the Amazon countries constitutes an opportunity for exchange and cooperation in the region. This was a major conclusion from the Regional Expert Workshop on forest financing in the Amazon Region (10 -11 April 2014, Santa Cruz, Bolivia) organized by Permanent Secretariat of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) with assistance of Tropenbos International.

It sounds logic, but the opposite is true. A stable demand for sustainably produced tropical timber is important for maintaining tropical rainforests and supporting local economic development. High economic value of forests will reduce the attractiveness for the conversion of the forests to other land uses. This was the general consensus reached at the event of the Green Deal for the Promotion of Sustainable Forest Management organised by the Secretariat of the Green Deal and Tropenbos International, on 15th May 2014 in Almere, the Netherlands.

The Jakarta Post - Indonesia has set aside 22.8 million hectares of conservation area in the form of national parks and reserves; however, the effectiveness of the management protecting these reserves and forests remains unproven. Deforestation has been unchecked, and occurs even in areas that have high value and vulnerable ecosystems, such as heath forest, peat swamp forest or endangered species habitat.
