Renewing the European Tropical Forest Research Network - Informing European policies and programmes to better sustain forest landscapes and peoples

Renewing the European Tropical Forest Research Network - Informing European policies and programmes to better sustain forest landscapes and peoples

the Netherlands - 04 February, 2020

Acknowledging past achievements, but also that the landscape in which it operates has evolved in so many ways over past decades, in 2019 ETFRN initiated a scoping study to reassess its niche and (potential) future roles. As part of this study we spoke to many different people and organisations who have been part of ETFRN, and others who have not. We asked questions about its continuing relevance, and if so, what revisions should be made to its membership, target group, gaps and emerging issues to address, priority activities, organizational and management structure, and how to secure financial sustainability.

The combined response indicates there is a clear perceived need for a European-level platform for forest-related organizations to advise the European Commission, Member States, and institutes within them and beyond, with evidence-based information in support of policy development and programme implementation. Based on the initial rounds of interviews, an interim report was prepared (available on request), and following further discussions, this led to the development of a draft proposal, where we would appreciate a last round of feedback before building it into a full proposal to be submitted to donors, including the EC.

We warmly welcome your feedback on the draft proposal, taking into account two lead questions...

  1. What are your suggestions to improve the relevance of a renewed ETFRN?
  2. Would you support a donor proposal, and if so, what role(s) do you envisage for your organization?
