GIS course in support of forest information management

In an attempt to improve the capacity for its partners and stakeholders in the forest sector of Viet Nam, TBI Viet Nam organized a course on “GIS application in forest information management” from 13 to 16 January 2011 in Hue city.

The course was the follow-up of a series of courses organized during the period of 2008-2009. Based on local demands, the objective of the course was to equip participants with necessary knowledge and skills in operation and management of the forest information system.

Participating at the course were young professionals and researchers of Forest Protection Sub-Department, Forest Sub-Department, and provincial FIPI’s of Thua Thien Hue, Quang Tri, Quang Binh and Nghe An province.

The course content focused on practical aspects in dealing with data processing and updating database, for instance conversion of coordination system from WGS84 to VN2000 and vice versa; working with GIS data based on ArcGIS 9.3; establishment and management of forest information database through GeoDatabase; and application of Trimble Office Quick Plan to process data from GPS.

Trainees believed that the knowledge and skills obtained from the course will help them exploit the database effectively, and thus contributing to decision-making process in the forest sector.
