Closing Event: Intercultural Education in the SENA: Advancements and Challenges in the Attention of Ethnic Communities

Colombia - 18 September, 2012

Since 2008, Tropenbos International and SENA jointly implemented the project “Training in environmental management and sustainable production chains” (2008-2012). The project provided SENA with knowledge, tools and trained staff on intercultural capacity building related to environmental management and sustainable production chains. The closing event “Intercultural Education in the SENA: Advancements and Challenges in the Attention of Ethnic Communities” of this NUFFIC funded project took place in Bogota on July 7 and 8, 2012.

The event was opened with a plenary session in which the Director General of SENA, Luis Alfonso Hoyos, and representatives of the Royal Netherlands Embassy, NUFFIC, and of several Colombia Ministries participated. They gave their views on intercultural capacity building and the relevance of the project approach. Over 100 participants, from all 7 SENA Centres the project worked with, SENA Bogota and other organizations interested in intercultural education and small productive projects geared to the needs of local communities attended the seminar. Representative of local communities, local SENA instructors and management staff of the Centres had travelled to Bogota to present their experiences. In the seminar room, the covers of over 140 reference documents and videos resulting from the project were displayed. In the afternoon, working groups formulated recommendations to SENA management for a strategy on intercultural capacity building within SENA.
The next day, a fair took place on the square in front of SENA’s main building in which each regional SENA Centre displayed a selection of the products and materials developed during the project.
This event allowed a large group of SENA staff and people from outside to become familiar with intercultural education and the wide variety of local products and differences in local contexts.
