Awareness about FLEGT-VPA and artisanal logging in Province Orientale, DR Congo

DR Congo - 30 September, 2014

A series of workshops on FLEGT-VPA and artisanal logging where held in different territories of the Province Orientale in DR Congo, from 13 to 27 September 2014. The main aim of these trainings was to raise awareness about the process of negotiation of FLEGT-VPA in DR Congo among local actors.

These workshops are a follow up of a training held at the beginning of September in Kisangani, DR Congo, where the participants had received the task of organizing feedback sessions in their respective territories. About 100 people in each of the six territories (Aru, Mahagi, Mambasa, Bafwasende, Isangi and Ubundu) have benefited from this trainings. The participants had the opportunity to discuss issues related to forest governance in their respective territory. The main issues discussed where: the appropriation of revenue from logging by traditional chiefs, the multiplicity of taxes, violation of rights of local communities by loggers and the lack of reforestation activities by the state.

These series of trainings are being developed under the framework of the project "FLEGT-VPA: exploitation and legal timber trade everybody's business" developed by TBI DR Congo.
