Capacity building and scholarships

TBI-Vietnam aims to improve and strengthen the development of human resources and the research capacities of key institutions and organizations. TBI-Vietnam provides MSc scholarships to talented young Vietnamese to study in the Netherlands. Their studies include a period of field study in Vietnam, which they carry out within one of the TBI-Vietnam projects.

Mr. Le Tien Phong and Mr. Vu Tien Dien, two staff members of FIPI, have started their MSc studies in Nature Resources Management at ITC in the Netherlands in September 2002. They will carry out their field study in Vietnam. One scholarship is funded by TBI-Vietnam, the other by International Institute for Geoinformation Science and Earth Observation (ITC).

For the academic year 2003-2004, TBI-Vietnam has received funding from the Royal Embassy of Netherlands for five more scholarships. The employers support their staff during the period of study and guarantee a job after graduation in which they can apply the acquired knowledge.

Mr. Vu Tien Dien from the Forest Resources and Environment Centre (FREC) in Hanoi claims that 'living and studying in the international environment gives me the chance to exchange experiences with people from all over the world with different specializations. I am learning new digital image processing techniques and multiple criteria analysis that will help me to solve problems I faced before coming to ITC'.

Mr. Le Tien Phong, working for the Technical department of sub-FIPI in Ho Chi Minh City has a clear idea about the added value of his MSc study: 'The most important thing I've learnt at ITC so far are GIS and remote sensing technologies and its application in natural resource management. Given the mandate of FIPI as a national institution responsible for forest inventory and planning, I expect to apply the obtained knowledge and skills in my work after returning to Vietnam'.

The capacity building activities also include short training courses. These courses are organized based on a training needs assessment with key organizations. Apart from technical knowledge and skills, attention is also paid to communication, information management and project management skills. The participants of these courses are mainly staff of our research partners. The TBI-Vietnam programme enables them to put their acquired knowledge into practice in collaboration with international researchers.
