Conservation and sustainable development of biological resources
has been identified by the government of Indonesia as a national
priority. By conserving biodiversity the government aims to ensure
the stability of ecosystems. Conservation would also maintain a
pool of genetic material for research and development to meet future
needs. Eusideroxylon zwageri, also called ironwood or Ulin, is a
species native to many parts of Indonesia, particularly in Kalimantan.
It is one of the heaviest and most durable
timbers of South East Asia. As such it is logged extensively
and is on the brink of extinction. Ulin is also very important to
local communities in Kalimantan, who use its wood for many purposes
and its fruits as a medicine against swellings.
This research aims to develop a strategy for sustainable management
and conservation of Ulin. The project addresses silvicultural aspects
as well as the conservation of genetic resources of Ulin, involving
local communities and providing
generative and vegetative planting stocks for rehabilitation of
degraded natural stands.
