Design and development of an effective monitoring and certification system to support sustainable management of production forest in Indonesia

Networks | Publications | Projects

Since 2000, the Indonesian Government has regulated that all concession holders (HPH) have an eco label certificate proving they manage the forest in a sustainable manner. Many management models for sustainable forest management (SFM) and certification have been developed. However, in practice these models and indicator systems experience problems of feasibility, efficiency and effectiveness. Also, the certification model for Indonesian production forests is still based on a situation of full authority of the concessionaire and central government, whereas this has changed due to decentralisation.

This research project will select and adapt an SFM model which takes into account the decentralization process currently taking place in Indonesia and which considers the rights and partnership of all relevant stakeholders. A practical and effective certification system for production forests will be established, that supports the SFM model and allows monitoring at concession level. To that end, geo-information technology (GIS and remote sensing) will be used and decision support theory will be applied.

In this research project several students will be trained. One PhD and two MSc students will be funded by Tropenbos International.
