The Tropenbos International Indonesia Programme (TBI Indonesia) started in 1987 and has a Mutual Agreement of Understanding with the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry since 1993. Its partner in Indonesia is FORDA, the Forest Research and Development Agency in Bogor. The Mulawarman University in Samarinda acts as the Indonesian scientific coordinator, while the Centre for Environmental Science from Leiden University is the scientific coordinator in the Netherlands.

Mission

TBI Indonesia's mission is to improve the use and management of forests for a healthy environment, sustainable development and prosperity of the people in East Kalimantan.

Programme

To achieve its mission, TBI Indonesia uses the following programme strategies in Indonesia:

  • Generation of relevant information

TBI Indonesia pursues demand-driven, basic and applied research to generate development-relevant information. Its research focuses on socio-economic and ecological interactions at the interface of tropical forests and surrounding human societies. By providing relevant information, TBI Indonesia aims to improve the use of and governance over forests.

  • Training and capacity building

Through collaboration with Indonesian universities, TBI Indonesia supports the training of Indonesian scientists to improve local research capacity. In all research projects of TBI Indonesia, Indonesian students are involved; this includes interns at the BSc level, as well as MSc and PhD students who carry out their field research under TBI Indonesia's guidance.

  • Strengthening of institutions

TBI Indonesia fosters close collaboration with local stakeholders by involving them in its programme activities. TBI Indonesia supports institution building through training and generation of demand driven information by and for its stakeholders, many of whom are decision makers.

Programme site

To achieve impact, TBI Indonesia focuses its research effort on East Kalimantan's Gunung Lumut Protection Forest (Pasir District), Kapuas Hulu. and Malinau. TBI Indonesia chose this area because it represents many relevant issues and developments in the forest sector in Indonesia.

Research projects

The following projects are being executed within the TBI Indonesia programme:

Since late 2004, TBI Indonesia is also part of the Forest Partnership "From Kalimantan Districts to the Global Market Place", in which it collaborates with WWF International, WWF-Indonesia, CIFOR and the Ministry for Development Cooperation of the Dutch Government. The partners have joint efforts to promote sustainable forest management in Kalimantan, linking it with international trade in Asia and Europe. TBI Indonesia's specific contribution is in the coordination of the "Good Forest Governance and Area-Based Conservation" module.
