Chainsaw lumber production, a necessary evil?
Everybody knows chainsaw operations destroy the forest. The local timber market cannot supply the demand. Wood prices are increasing and the benefit does not go to the local communities. One issue from different points of view. The focus group discussion on Tuesday 11th November, 2003 brought together key stakeholders to debate the issue and come up with a way forward. Challenges and Opportunities in forest management
Corruption, illegal chainsaw operations, forestry laws and acts, indigenous knowledge: the forestry sector in Ghana involves many challenges and opportunities. TBI-Ghana took the opportunity of the Annual General Meeting of the Ghana Institute of Professional Foresters 10th-11th of July 2003 to organise a focus group discussion. A group of over 100 professional foresters discussed challenges and opportunities in forestry practices, wildlife management, training and education of the professional foresters and in natural resource management in general.
