The issuance of Law No.6/2014 on village has provided a new perspective on village natural resource management in Indonesia. The law provides larger space and stronger position for village government to manage their natural resources. The decision hopes to support the villages to be stronger, democratic and independent. Development activities can be handled by the village itself and support from the government, if any, should be in line with the village development plan.

The law shall also be seen as a golden opportunity for better governance and sustainable management of natural resources at landscape level. However, collaboration will be needed with other parties, since it will not be possible for the village to work alone. The role of the higher government, NGOs, and other stakeholders will be crucial to mainstream the management of natural resources.

The hands should be offered to enable village government to revitalize control, access and ownership of village assets, i.e. village land, village forest, etc. Village development plan should also be defined properly with natural resources management strategies. The enforcement of village regulations to utilize and protect natural resources such as watershed, spring water, etc. should be guaranteed so that any economic activities in particular will not ruin the sustainability of its natural resources.
