"Promoting bottom-up approach is a strategic astuteness of public policies to promote sustainable forest management." This is the key message conveyed by this policy brief resulting from the study on "organizational system and socio-economic management of rural households in Orientale Province, DRC."

This study demonstrates that villages have their own socioeconomic organization which must be taken into account in major forest policy decisions. Therefore, it is imperative to start with the local realities and involve local leaders when policies regarding sustainable management of natural resources are designed. A bottom-up approach takes into consideration local contexts, recognizes local organizations and has an effective involvement of villagers.

The recommendations given in this policy brief focus on the consideration of local contexts, the involvement of villagers in the development of policies and supporting local initiatives.
