FSC certification is not the right instrument to improve forest governance in DR Congo at the moment. This was the conclusion of a network event organised by WWF and the Dutch Tropical Forest Association VTB the 23th of April at the WWF office in Zeist, the Netherlands.

This was a major message emanating from the side event Good Business: Making Private Investment Work for Forests at the UNFF-10 on April 15 in Istanbul. The side event was jointly organized by World Bank/PROFOR, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für international Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and Tropenbos International.

From a traditional point of view, the territory is multidimensional: it considers not only the physical-geographical area or the political-administrative dimensions, but it also includes the shamanic, mythological and inter-ethnic aspects. Chainsaw milling is the on-site conversion of logs into lumber using chainsaws. Significant and increasing amounts of timber in the tropics for local markets are produced using this simple technology. For many local and indigenous forest dependent communities, chainsaw milling is an important source of income.
The European Tropical Forest Research Network (ETFRN) is a network on forests and development, which aims to ensure that European research contributes to conservation and sustainable use of forest and tree resources in tropical and subtropical countries.

The Colombian regions of the Amazon, Orinoco and the Pacific Coast have a very rich bio- and cultural diversity. Ethnic communities in these regions have a clear need for targeted capacity building that meets their demands and matches the context they are living in.
In the National Natural Park Katíos (PNN Katíos), declared as World Natural Heritage in 1994, activities are being implemented for the formulation of natural resources management plans with the communities in its area of influence. One of the main challenges is to increase community participation, specially the community of Tumaradó, in the fishing agreements that are being developed and the management plan of the Park.
Logging is attracting more and more attention from investors the last few years in the DR Congo. Beside industrial exploitation, small and medium enterprises develop and some of them significantly contribute to the economy both locally and nationally. This project aims to research how small and medium forest enterprises contribute to reduce poverty and better manage natural resources.
