The EU chainsaw milling project has expanded its multi-stakeholder dialogue (MSD) platform to two new forest districts: Tarkwa and Nkwanta.
15 May, 2012TBI Viet Nam held its final workshop of phase two on April 17th, 2012 in Hue, Viet Nam. The overall objective of the workshop was to evaluate the obtained results compiled by TBI Viet Nam, and to introduce the programme’s orientation thru 2016.
15 May, 2012On April 10th, 2012, TBI Viet Nam, with support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), conducted a workshop in Ha Noi entitled, “Forestry Land Allocation: Policy and Practice.” The event was held in cooperation with the Department of Science, Technology and Environment (under MARD) and the Institute of Forest Planning and Inventory (FIPI).
The trans-boundary TRIDOM (Dja-Odzala-Minkébé) landscape has been identified by COMIFAC (Commission des Forêts d'Afrique Centrale) as one of the 12 priority landscapes for biodiversity conservation in the Congo Basin. It covers a surface of 141.000 km² in Congo, Gabon and Cameroon, including 35.968 km² (24 %) of protected areas.
Until recently this TRIDOM landscape was relatively untouched because of its inaccessibility but for the next couple of years several infrastructural developments such as railways, roads, mining and agriculture are foreseen. However, the concerned governments do not seem to be adequately prepared for these upcoming large-scale developments: no trans-boundary development plan or land use plan have been presented and the level of involvement of population and other stakeholders is low. The GEF TRIDOM project implemented by UNOPS aims to mobilise the support of the concerned states and COMIFAC for the land use planning process in the TRIDOM landscape.
TBI Cameroon has supported this process through the establishment of a platform in 2009. This platform meets regularly and has been engaged in discussions with the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Regional Development (MINEPAT), which has a coordinating role in harmonizing the plans of the different line ministries and has to prepare a zoning plan. This platform has become an official partner of MINEPAT for the TRIDOM zone in Cameroon.
A baseline study, which is co-financed by TBI Cameroon and UNESCO, has been commissioned to describe the land utilisation and the socio-economic features of the TRIDOM area over the last 10 years, executed by the Geography Department of the University of Yaounde I. The platform provides the databases and reports in their possession and feedback on the baseline study.
In order to contribute to reducing impacts of new infrastructure development on the people and biodiversity inside the TRIDOM area, as a first step all existing reports and databases are gathered and analysed to describe the present state of the Cameroonian part of the TRIDOM zone and discuss general impacts on local population, forest and biodiversity.
