Artisanal logging – small scale logging and processing of tree using chainsaws - is widely practiced in the Oriental province. The organization of logging, transportation and trade is highly variable, as is the destination of the lumber.
Most of the timber is harvested from forest areas owned by the rural population by customary law but it is unclear what economic benefit actually reaches the rural population. Whereas industrial enterprises are obliged to sign a social- responsibility-agreement with the communities on whose land they log, this kind of regulations do not exist for those using small scale logging permits as the artisanal loggers. The research will be carried out in 50 communities distributed in three districts in Oriental Province.
Identify all direct and indirect economic benefits the rural population derives from artisanal logging activities to estimate the effect on local economies.
