Scenario analysis for the sustainable management of Ghana’s high forests
project1_3
In Ghana timber is harvested from forest reserves, off-reserve areas and forest plantations. But little is known about how timber resources in those areas develop, the factors that affect those developments and the consequences of different policy and management options on the dynamics of the resource. While there is some information and experience about timber resource within the forest reserves, little is known about the dynamics of timber resources on farmlands and the newly established plantations. What impact will the current management systems have on the sustainability of forest resources? What are the options available for policy and management, and how would each option impact on the sustainability of the resource in Ghana?

This project has been designed to provide a country level analysis of how timber resources develop in the High Forest Zones (HFZs) of Ghana. The aim is project_1to provide quantitative insights into the long-term consequences of alternative policy and management scenarios for timber production in the HFZ.

Objective
To develop alternative forest policy and management scenarios for sustainable forest management planning in Ghana.

Duration
2008 to 2011

Expected outputs
Evidence-based knowledge on:

  • the key processes and drivers of forest resource use in Ghana,
  • the implications of alternative scenarios for sustainable forest management in Ghana,
  • the possible future development of off-reserve and on-reserve forests in Ghana.
  • Raise national human capacity to generate and use information through training:
  • One PhD researcher
