| International Cooperation invited to participate in the elaboration of the National Development Policy for the Amazon |
|
This document (CONPES) is the highest national planning policy document and was created by the National Economic and Social Policy Council which acts as the government's advisor in all development related subjects in the country. During these discussions several topics were brought up such as the role of protected areas and indigenous territories which together occupy approximately 60% of the Colombian Amazon. Another important subject was the payment of environmental goods and services for Amazon countries and the eminent threats that the region faces, like mining and large infrastructure projects (roads and harbors). Indigenous leaders are worried about the lack of inclusion of indigenous views in the definition of regional policies. There is no doubt about the political and economic importance of conservation actions in the Amazon. It will be the government's responsibility with the support of international cooperation to ensure that civil society and local institutions participate in achieving sustainable development in the Amazon. This should be done by respecting indigenous rights, by conserving and making adequate use of natural resources in order to contribute to a stabile global climate. |

The Colombian International Cooperation Agency has organized a series of meetings with government and non government organizations to discuss Government plans for the Amazon and how international cooperation can be linked to those actions. TBI Colombia was one of the institutions to be invited together with the Royal Dutch Embassy, the National Planning Department, the research institutions (Alexander von Humboldt and Sinchi), the Ministry of Environment, National Parks and other NGOs. During these meetings the National Planning Department presented a draft of a document which promotes respect to indigenous cultures, conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, land use plans, human welfare and financial investment in the region.
