TBI-Vietnam Conference:

'Research for Better Forest Management'

The Conference on "Research for Better Forest Management, Conservation, Sustainable Development and Human well being" was organized on February 23 and 24 in the Learning Resource Centre in Hue. End of 2005, the research partners of Tropenbos International Vietnam (TBI-Vietnam) had finalized their research projects developed during the 1st phase (2001-2005).

New and relevant knowledge from our research projects became available on various topics of the forestry sector in Vietnam. This Conference is part of the efforts of TBI-Vietnam to disseminate the outputs to our direct partners and interested organizations so that new knowledge can be used for better decision making and forest management in Vietnam.

The objectives of the Conference were twofold:

" To present the outputs from the first phase of the TBI-Vietnam program
" Discuss the information required for the three identified topics in the forestry sector in Vietnam

Participants of the Conference
In total, 62 participants from various organizations and nationalities participated. Research organizations were represented by universities and institutes from Vietnam and abroad. NGO representatives as well as governmental organizations were represented from a national and provincial level. Especially, Mr. Hua Duc Nhi, vice Minister and several high officers from Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) participated as well. Presentations of session III

A poster session during the 1st day of the Conference provided participants with the possibility to present their more scientific results to a wider audience. This session also proved to be a good opportunity for participants to share information and discuss on their research projects and activities.
For the discussions, we asked the participants to focus on two main questions. The first question was 'What are the critical issues of the sector with respect to the theme of this session?' Based on the outcomes, we asked the participants to discuss for each identified issue, the specific information and capacity needs? The discussions were lively and a wide range of issues were mentioned by the participants.
