Tropenbos International back in Cameroon

In October 2007, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs gave the green light to Tropenbos International to start a new regional programme in Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The new programme will start in early 2008 and will run until 2011. With the addition of Cameroon, Tropenbos International will have country representations in six countries.

Cameroon is not new to Tropenbos International. Between 1994 and 2002, Tropenbos International conducted a research and capacity building programme designed to assist Cameroon in achieving sustainable forest management. The programme was carried out near Kribi in South Cameroon. Collaborative work between Dutch and Cameroonian universities led to the development of planning and forest management approaches that are consistent with the socio-economic and environmental realities of the area. Tropenbos International also coordinated the research activities in and around the adjacent Campo Ma’an National Park in a project funded by the World Bank.

The objectives, goals, partners, exact location and set-up of the new country programme will be designed in the near future. Cameroon will provide a good opportunity for an effective roll-out of the TBI concept. This is based on historic relations with former partners and the existing forest policy framework that is conducive to TBI’s approach, i.e. the use of information for policy making and management planning.
