Plant-insect relations, with special reference to pests of commercial tree species

(ENDED)

Objective:

The project is an exploratory study on forest entomology, focusing on insect harmful to timber species.The short-term objectives are:

  • To assess the occurrence and abundance of insect pest species, present in the study area, and periodic fluctuations in their frequency of occurrence;
  • To assess changes in insect behaviour as results of forestry activities (in respect of assessment of need for control measures).
Output:

All 22 timber tree species studied were attacked by insects. Intensity of attack depended on season. More damage occurred when sapling density is higher and in gaps in the canopy. Saplings seemed to be less susceptible than seedlings. Growing trees may repair certain damage to the stem form.Based on these results, research more directed at criteria and indicators for pest control in semi-natural forest can easily be formulated.
