Functional aspects of the evergreen forest in southern Cameroon

(ENDED)

Objective:

The general objective of this study is to assess the biological production of Cameroonian evergreen rain forest.Short-term objectives are:

  • To quantify basic ecological processes, such as biological production, water and nutrient cycling and accumulation of phytomass and nutrients;
  • To assess the influence of human activities on these ecological processes.The long-term objective is to assist in the development of sustainable (ecologically sound) management systems for the evergreen moist forest of Cameroon.
Output:

Hydrology: A meteorological and hydrological description of the area - to be used in land use and forest management planning activities - has been made and the nutrient stores and fluxes in the hydrological cycle has been analysed. Erosion hazards by human influences (logging, shifting cultivation) have been indicated. Management recommendations, mainly concerning erosion, have been formulated.

Vegetation: Important biomass and nutrient stores (leaves, branches, stems of trees, litter standing crop) and fluxes (litterfall, decomposition) in undistrubed and disturbed (logged over) forest are described. Influence on both of the light eploitation as carried out seven years ago estimated and preliminary judged.
