Assessing Landscape Governance: A Participatory Approach

In any landscape, the interests of stakeholders can both connect and conflict, often at the same time. Landscape governance relates to how various interests in the landscape are balanced in decision making and how the rules stimulate the sustainable management of the landscape resources. To achieve sustainable landscape development, it is therefore key to understand how governance processes are organized, and how this influences the decisions and behaviour of the actors in the landscape.

“Forest users to producers: Scaling up FFPOs business and enterprises”, Asian FFPOs Regional Conference

This conference was held from 20 to 22 November in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar with the main theme “From users to producers: Scaling up FFPOs business to implement Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in climate resilient landscapes”. A preceding three-day exchange trip involved 57 of the conference participants in a visit to the Wuyan community forest and associated rattan business and planned sawmill in Wiang Maw Township, Kachin State. This led into the conference itself which involved two days of discussion sandwiching a field trip to the model Yoe Sone community forest with its Sterculia resin enterprise in Wun Dwin Township, Mandalay State.

Impact investments in agricultural and forestry smallholders: it can be done!

A growing number of investors aspire to make the transition from ‘doing no harm’ towards ‘doing good’, said Tropenbos International director René Boot in his opening statement at the seminar Towards inclusive investments and business models for improved land governance and livelihoods. “The positive news is that this can be done.” The seminar yielded a rich harvest of cases, ideas and conditions on how this transition can take place.
